Smart agriculture for innovative vegetable crop protection
SmartProtect is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (GA 862563). The project’s objective is to create a thematic network focusing on cross regional knowledge sharing of SMART IPM solutions for farmers and advisors. The aim is to stimulate knowledge flow in the regional Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKISs) across the E.U. and connect these on the innovative potential of advanced methodologies for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in vegetable production, integrating precision farming technologies and data analytics. The project’s duration is 3 years, with the second period having already started since July 2021. The project consortium consists of 15 partners from 12 countries in Europe that promote a multi-actor approach promoting knowledge sharing.

SmartProtect Platform is a freely accessible repository of innovative IPM solutions for vegetable cultivations. Click Here to visit the Platform and explore its content. Application techniques, Decision Support Systems, Diagnostics and Detection techniques, as well as monitoring techniques are available to all interested parties. Subcategories are also available for enabling specific search regarding sprayers, spraying drones, UV-systems, distribution systems for beneficials in the frame of Application techniques; Elisa, RNA and DNA methods, along with mobile disorder detection in Diagnostics and Detection techniques; as well as crop monitoring and insect monitoring as subcategories of Monitoring techniques.
The Platform aims to facilitate the application of pest management practices and the promotion of exploitation of available innovative tools and techniques. Producers, stakeholders, advisors and many others can find specific smart technologies by navigating or using keywords for precise search. Filters provide users with the ability to customize their search, while the platform is available in 12 different languages (English, Dutch, French, German, Estonian, Slovenian, Portuguese, Czech, Spanish, Latvian, Greek, and Hungarian).
Up today, around 200 smart solutions and technologies are registered, while the platform’s content is constantly increasing. Additionally, all interested parties can suggest additional innovations to the platform. Just register, select “My solutions” and “Add new solution”. SmartProtect actions and events
During the second period of the project’s lifetime events will be held around Europe aiming to exchange experiences and opinions on smart IPM technologies, and promote the demonstration of such technologies in field. Different actors form different countries will be involved, providing the ability to interactive communication with producers, stakeholders and experts in the vegetable production sector.
